Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party claimed election victory in four Indian states on Saturday, calling it a "historic mandate" that would take the country's politics in a new direction.

"The people of these states have given a historic mandate to the BJP," said party leader Amit Shah ahead of a formal results announcement by the election commission due later Saturday.
