President Barack Obama welcomed Xi Jinping to the White House Thursday, greeting his Chinese counterpart with a mandarin "ni hao," or hello, before the pair strolled across the road for an informal meal.

Xi kicked off his first US state visit with dinner at Blair House, which Obama's aides have billed as a meeting that could help shape troubled relations for years to come.
