Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff denounced the brief detention by police Friday of her predecessor and political ally Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, calling the measure "unnecessary."
"I want to express my complete disagreement with the fact that an ex-president of the republic who has on various occasions voluntarily gone to give information to the competent authorities is now subjected to unnecessary detention in order to make a statement," she said in a statement.
