Spain's prime minister called Wednesday on Catalan separatists to stop their "escalation of radicalism and disobedience" as thousands protested in Barcelona over the detention of regional officials ahead of a banned independence referendum.

"There is still time to avoid bigger problems," Mariano Rajoy said in a televised statement, as the demonstration in the Mediterranean seaside city headed into the night.
