US Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov started key talks Friday in Vienna over the Syrian conflict, after Moscow thrust itself into the heart of the crisis with its bombing campaign backing President Bashar al-Assad.

The top diplomats will later be joined by the foreign ministers of Turkey and Saudi Arabia, who along with the US support groups battling against Assad.
