The Italian transport ministry said Tuesday it will open an inquiry over the Volkswagen emissions scandal and demand explanations from the German auto giant.

The ministry said in a statement it was "concerned" about the matter, and needs to know "whether the same illegal actions that were uncovered in the United States" showing that Volkswagen had equipped diesel cars with a device that can cheat pollution tests also took place in Europe and whether such cars were sold in Italy.
