Between 520,000 and 550,000 people joined a march in Barcelona on Friday demanding independence for the northeastern Catalonia region, the Spanish government said.

Barcelona city police estimated some 1.4 million people took part in the march, which comes ahead of regional polls billed as an indirect vote on breaking away from Spain.
