The United States and Japan hailed "significant progress" in bilateral trade talks Tuesday and urged the finalization of a Pacific trade deal encompassing 40 percent of the world economy.

In a joint statement issued as President Barack Obama hosted Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the White House, both nations also reaffirmed their commitment "to achieve a swift and successful conclusion" to the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership.
