Scores of dead fish found along Kuwait Bay have caused authorities to investigate a suspected case of ‘fish kill’, local media have reported. The Environment Public Authority (EPA) has ordered the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) to investigate why the fish might have died and supervise the area, according to the Kuwait Times. Officials say the fish deaths could have been caused by pollution in the water or a major imbalance in marine environment. Salah Al-Mudhi, General Director of Environment Public Authority (EPA), told one newspaper that the dead fish could have been dumped into the sea by fishermen because most belonged to the ‘Giant Sea Catfish,’ species. However, others say it is unlikely fishermen would have thrown such a huge number of dead fish into the sea, and any case of dumping would have occurred in a popular fishing spot, not in deep water. Inspectors are continuing to observe the area.
