International Expert in environmental affairs Dr. Ali Qutb stressed Qatar’s ability to host major scientific conferences, noting to the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference 2012 (COP18/CMP8), due to be held in Doha on November 26 to December 7. In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Dr. Qutb expressed hope that UN Conference on Climate Change will be a real beginning for the Arab region to host such conferences, especially in the scientific field in order to activate and strengthen Arab-Arab cooperation, particularly in the field of climate. The Expert expected that the conference would come out with recommendations that are subject to change, and perhaps effective, considering that there are some countries, especially the major, have interests not to activate these recommendations under the pretext that their interests will be harmed. He noted that there were international conferences that came out with recommendations, including Kyoto Convention, Bali conference and Copenhagen conference but there are many of these recommendations have not been activated due to the economic interests of a number of countries. Dr. Qutb also said in his statement to QNA that what is required from developed countries at this particular time is to help Arab, African and Asian countries to receive technical and financial support and to actively participate in scientific conferences. He said that the developed countries should at first implement the recommendations that come out from such scientific conferences and not invoke that these recommendations detriment their interests, because the whole world is one and indivisible and has become a small village.
