A very strong typhoon is heading toward western Japan, Japan's broadcaster NHK World reported.
Typhoon Malakas is moving northeast at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour. It was at about 260 kilometers west of the island of Tokunoshima in Kagoshima Prefecture on Monday.
Its central pressure is 945 hectopascals. It is packing winds of more than 160 kilometers per hour near its center, and its maximum wind gust speed is 216 kilometers per hour.
Meteorological Agency officials said that the western part of Japan, including Kyushu, will be affected with very strong winds beginning Monday evening.
They said the typhoon is then expected to continue heading east, coming close to the eastern part of Japan.
