One hundred and forty Belgian soldiers will soon be deployed in a special operation to patrol the country's nuclear sites, the Belgian cabinet announced on Friday.
According to TV news channel RTL Info, these additional security measures were initiated by the Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon and follow the attacks in Paris last November.
A video found at the home of a suspected terrorist suggests that it was possible that attacks were being planned at Belgian nuclear sites, the report added.
The nuclear plants that will be protected by the army are Doel, Tihange, Mol, Dessel and Fleurus. The cost of the extra security measures will be met by electricity company Electrabel.
There are currently 740 military personnel carrying out patrols in Belgium. The terror threat level in the country, as set by the Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis (OCAM), remains at level 3 out of a possible 4.
