Emilia strengthened into a hurricane in the eastern Pacific Monday but did not threaten coastal areas, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. At 11 a.m. EDT, Emilia was about 710 miles south of the southern tip of Baja California early Monday, carrying maximum sustained winds of 100 mph and moving west-northwest at 12 mph. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. Emilia is a Category 2 hurricane and was expected to strengthen further. While Emilia gains strength, meteorologists say Hurricane Daniel has started to weaken as it moves over cooler waters about 1,300 miles west-southwest of Baja California. The Category 1 storm was moving west at 15 mph with sustained winds of 85 mph. Daniel was forecast to continue moving west and gradually weaken to a tropical storm Monday night and a tropical depression by Wednesday night, the National Hurricane Center said.
