As one of America’s favorite sports cars, the Chevrolet Corvette is also one of the most targeted models of its kind by thieves, with the non-profit National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) having identified 134,731 thefts between 1953 and 2011 from a total production of 1,526,747 vehicles. However, because of the fact that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration started requiring vehicle identification number (VIN) standardization from the 1981 model year and onwards, NCIB says it is not confident in the pre-1981 records “due to the inconsistency in reporting protocols and VIN systems”. Looking at NICB’s figures during the 30-year period from 1981 to 2011, we see that 90,427 Corvettes were reported stolen in the United States and Puerto Rico, out of a total production of 862,918 vehicles in the same timeframe. The most stolen model year Corvette is the 1984MY with 8,554 reported thefts followed by the 1981MY with 8,262 units. More surprising are the results per state as California is the capital of Corvette thefts with 14,002 or a little over 15 percent of the total. The top 10 states account for 63,409 thefts or about 70 percent of the total.
