About 100 boys ages 13 to 18 gathered this weekend at a camp in Detroit to learn leadership skills from soldiers, organizers said. The Steve Harvey Mentoring Camp for Young Men began Friday at the Northwest Activity Center Detroit, The Detroit News reported Saturday. The camp is held in cities throughout the country and was sponsored by the U.S. Army and the Steve & Margorie Harvey Foundation. The camp pairs groups of 10 boys with two mentor soldiers, who teach them leadership and other skills, the newspaper reported. The boys chosen for the camp lack positive male role models and the majority are African-American, the newspaper said. \"What they\'ve done is allow boys to apply who do not have positive male role models in their lives,\" said Ayona Anderson, a spokeswoman for the event. \"They are trying to teach them the importance of leadership, manhood and getting an education.\" The boys will graduate from the camp Sunday with a special ceremony where certificates and prizes will be awarded, the newspaper said.
