Administrators at a central Florida school say they have decided not to expel a student with "puffy" hair, but they are asking her to style it differently. After the threat by Faith Christian Academy in Orlando against 12-year-old Vanessa VanDyke became national news, school administrators softened their demands, WKMG-TV in Orlando reported Tuesday. "We are not asking her to put products in her hair or to cut her hair," the school said in a statement. "We are asking her to style her hair within the guidelines according to the school handbook." School guidelines prohibit hair deemed "distracting," such as "Mohawks, shaved signs, rat tails, etc." Large or frizzy hair is not mentioned. Last week, a school adviser told the child's mother, Sabrina Kent, she had to straighten her daughter's hair or cut it, or Vanessa would be forced to leave the school. Mom and daughter say they are going to discuss possible ways of styling her hair over Thanksgiving.
