Amman - Iman Abu Kaoud
A 21-year-old Jordanian student has died at Mutah University in Karak, where over the past five days there has been escalating violence due to student elections. The University has suspended study pending further investigations. The student reportedly died from tear gas inhalation, after security forces tried to dispel groups of students who were clashing violently. The Jordan Times has reported that the victim, fourth year engineering student Osama el-Daheesy, was a bystander to the violence, but was near the crowd when police used the gas. The National Campaign for Students’ Rights criticised the University for allowing the violence to escalate, and demanded that the government take responsibility. While sources told Arabstoday, that politicians in Southern cities had demanded study be suspended for a year. There were over 82 reported riots at Jordanian universities in 2012.
