Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is offering 4,900 places in various courses which will be open for registration tomorrow. UMS vice chancellor (VC) Prof Datuk Dr Kamaruzaman Ampon anticipated an increase in the number of students. \"Last year we offered 5,000 places but those who came for registration were about 4,900. \"We also expect to receive appeals for entry after the registration period from those who had not been able to come on time,\" he told reporters after launching UMS\' redesigned website at the main campus here today. He said the university would give a grace period of two to three weeks in consideration of those living in remote areas who might not have received notice of their acceptance yet. According to Kamaruzaman, 60 per cent of the new intake would be from the peninsula, 35 per cent from Sabah and the rest from Sarawak. \"Sabah students usually prefer other universities such as the University of Malaya and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Anyway, this is a positive thing from the aspect of national integration,\" he said. Earlier in his speech the VC said UMS aimed to make its website among the top 10 websites of higher learning institutions in Malaysia. He said the university\'s website, which had undergone transformation for the fourth time since UMS was established, also featured Facebook.
