Seventy-four protesters were arrested after students tried to storm the gates of Hong Kong's government
headquarters, dpa cited police as saying on Saturday.
At least 29 police and civilians were injured in clashes as
pro-democracy protests escalated in the Chinese territory.
By 2 pm, police had cleared a crowd of about five dozen protesters
from the square outside government offices, as others chanted at
police to stop.
Student leader Joshua Wong, 17, was arrested for assaulting police,
according to a spokesman. Other offences included forcibly entering
government property and public disorder, police said.
Hong Kong Secretary for Security Lai Tung-kwok said police had acted
appropriately and gave students ample warnings before clearing the
square to restore public order.
About 150 protesters were surrounded by police and led away from the
premises early Saturday, according to local reports.
