The abandoned baby girl in Sharjah will only be handed over to the welfare home on Thursday, hospital officials have said. Naeema Al Nakhi, head of the social services section at Al Qasimi Hospital told that although the baby was doing well and was scheduled to be sent to the shelter on Wednesday, it will most probably have to wait. “It is very likely that the baby will not be discharged from the hospital today,” said Al Nakhi on Wednesday. The newborn was found abandoned last week near a villa in Al Hera. According to Al Nakhri, the hospital has received numerous calls by parents who are willing to adopt the baby. “During the last three days, we must have at least received about 10 enquiries from different emirates,” she said. However, she added that so far no decision has been made on the adoption. “Although we have received these many willing families we have still not made any decision. Moreover, it will be taken up by those in-charge at the Social Welfare Home for Children,” she added. Speaking to the website on Tuesday, Al Nakhi had said that the number of abandoned babies in Sharjah has been increasing. In the past three months alone, four new born babies were found abandoned in different parts of Sharjah. In comparison, about 10 babies were rescued in 2011, she said.
