New York - QNA
The State of Qatar stressed the importance of reforming the United Nations Security Council in light of the current challenges and conflicts.
Addressing the UN General Assembly Intergovernmental Negotiations on Security Council Reform, HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani said that the important and significant role of the Security Council makes the need for its reform a necessity and a priority more than ever.
Under the UN Charter, the Security Council has the primary responsibility for maintaining and ensuring international peace and security. It is the only body in the United Nations that has the authority to make decisions binding on all Member States, and to take enforcement measures under the provisions of the collective security of the Charter, therefore, the success of the overall reform of the United Nations depends mainly on the reform of the Security Council, HE Ambassador Sheikha Alya underlined.
After more than seven decades, the United Nations is overburdened with challenges in light of the accelerated transformations that have occurred in the international system and the increasing challenges, crises and conflicts which have changed many concepts and imposed a new reality that is difficult to deal with in traditional formats. However, those changes and challenges created many opportunities and high hopes thanks to the growing concepts of justice and the rule of law, equality, human rights, development, and international cooperation, she noted.
HE the Ambassador said that the reform of the Security Council is still facing many difficulties and challenges, but such reform is a necessity for the Council to ensure its ability in maintaining world peace and security and facing the current critical challenges.
Based on Qatar's belief in the pivotal role of the United Nations, and its commitment to responsible participatory to achieve international consensus towards issues of concern to the international community, Doha hosted in January a meeting on United Nations Security Council reforms, in contribution to providing an opportunity to hold an informal dialogue away from formal frameworks, and help the co-chairs and the Member States to give a boost to the intergovernmental negotiations.
The State of Qatar reaffirms its readiness to continue to take initiatives that contribute to the convergence of views, HE Ambassador Sheikha Alya concluded.
