China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei on Tuesday confirmed that an American woman has been held by his country's authorities over charges of "stealing state secrets."

In statements, the spokesman added that the American Sandy Phan-Gillis had been under investigation since March on suspicion of activities harmful to Chinese national security.

"We hope that the outside world will respect China's handling of this case according to the law," the spokesman said.
