Experts said that spinsterhood increased because of hard living conditions, unemployment and housing crisis, but there are more hidden reasons to this increase such as working minimum jobs, which the society sees as dishonest occupations for girls.
In European countries, nursing is a respected profession and nurses are fully appreciated for all of their contributions to the society, but in some Arab countries this occupation is seen as degrading job and doesn’t suit women because it requires working for long hours outside the house, and that is against the society customs. The media also plays a big part in planning that bad impression about nursing without mentioning all its merits, where movies and dramas always present nurses as bad people.
Working in beauty salons is also seen as a degrading job, as most of the workers in this occupation don’t enjoy any of the basic human and labor rights stipulated in labor legislations. While on the othe hand, many people see the occupations of flights attendants are prestigious professions, but others believe that they don’t suit women because they require moving from one place to another along with late and long working hours.
Dr. Pia Zenon said that, movies and TV dramas are the reasons behind the oriental society’s hate and disapproval of all of these professions, and as long as it is a night job or one that requires long hours, it will raise many questions in the people minds, and that is why the society alienates those women workers.
