Anne Hathaway

Disney is reportedly planning a third Princess Diaries film.

Sources recently told Tracking Board that Debra Chase, who produced the first two Princess Diaries films, has signed on for Princess Diaries 3.

The original film, which was based on Meg Cabot's novel of the same name, launched Anne Hathaway's career when it premiered in 2001. Hathaway played Mia Thermopolis, a San Francisco teenager who finds out that she's the heir to Genovia, a fictional European kingdom.

Julie Andrews played Hathaway's grandmother, the Queen of Genovia.

Tracking Board said it was unclear whether Hathaway or Andrews would reprise their roles because Disney has yet to decide whether it will reboot the franchise with a whole new cast.

Andrews told Access Hollywood last April that she didn't think Disney would make another Princess film, after the sequel, Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, hit theaters in 2004.

"I would never say no because Disney's so wonderfully clever and inventive, but I would think they'll stay with just the two because of Annie," Andrews said.
