Glory, Britney Spears’ latest release, has been beaten to the top of the UK album chart by the 35th studio album from US music veteran Barbra Streisand.
According to Forbes, Streisand’s “Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway” debuts this week as her seventh No. 1 album.
Among female solo acts in the British charts, Streisand is now only second to Madonna, who has notched up 12 chart-toppers. Celine Dion and Kylie Minogue both have five, and Diana Ross has four, according to Official Charts Company data.
Spears, 34, has to be content with No. 2 for her ninth album, Glory on RCA. The placing should not be seen as bad news for her, given that it is her fifth No. 2 album in the UK — she did not reach the summit even at her earlier peak.
While the numbers are much less, the British chart reacts quicker than some other countries, which will have some executives watching carefully, if not nervously.
These two singers’ entries push Frank Ocean’s Blonde, on Boys Don’t Cry records, down to third place. Dolly Parton’s Pure & Simple, on RCA Nashville, is at No. 4.
Bands feeling the effect from the Reading & Leeds Festival this week include Biffy Clyro, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Blink-182, with their albums all jumping up the chart.
