Amy Schumer's screenwriting debut Trainwreck may be what puts her on the A-list, critics said after the film released over the weekend.
According to BoxOffice.com's vice president and chief analyst, Trainwreck marks the "birth of a new film star" in the romantic comedy's protagonist. "She's going to get tons of offers," he said. "This puts her in the same realm as Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig."
Schumer's raunchy comedy, directed by This is 40's Judd Apatow and starring Bill Hader, Brie Larson, Colin Quinn and even LeBron James, came in third at the box office over the weekend hauling over $30 million. Variety observes that Trainwreck's opening weekend made more than Bridesmaids, Spy and The 40-Year-Old Virgin although those three were lead by pre-existing A-listers.
As of Monday, Trainwreck has an 85 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Atlantic's Christopher Orr predicts that the flick will propel Schumer "from cult icon to mass phenomenon."
"Schumer will almost certainly have many opportunities to deploy her edgy wit toward edgier ends," Orr concludes. "I can hardly wait."
