France has officially recognized the "systemic" use of "torture" during the national liberation war.
In a communiqué, the French presidency announced that President Emmanuel Macron will recognize on Thursday that Algerian activist Maurice Audin, disappeared in June 1957, is "dead under the torture used then in Algeria by France."
The Elysée added that the French Head of the State will hand over a declaration to Maurice Audin’s widow and will announce the "opening of the archives on the issue of the Algerian and French missing civilians and soldiers."
