Some works are expected to fetch £400,000 -£600,000 Untitled works by three of India’s greatest painters Tyeb Mehta, Maqbool Husain and Sayed Haider Raza, are set to make record prices when they are auctioned at Bonhams Indian and Islamic Sale on April 23. Bonhams of London, has stated that it is “extremely exciting” to see these paintings on the market as they have not been up for sale before.
The artists were involved in establishing the Progressive’s Artist Group in 1947, with the goal of directing the avant-garde approach away from traditional and nationalistic styles. The group consisted of many revered artists such as Francis Newton Souza and S. K Bakre, who are both featured in the sale.
The oil canvas work of Tyeb Mehtaoil, signed and dated 1978, is estimated to sell for between £400,000 -£600,000. It was purchased directly from the artist and has never been shown to the public. The work is an early example of Mehta's mature style.
