Tralala by Penhaligon’s

Tralala by Penhaligon’s The Anglo-French design duo and French perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour have revealed the creative processes behind their new fragrance for Penhaligon's. Meadham Kirchhoff is one of London's hottest emerging labels, which made it all the more exciting when we first heard it would team up with one of the city's oldest perfume houses. To celebrate the fragrance's international release on Monday, Penhaligon's has created two short films.
The duo of Englishman Edward Meadham and Frenchman Benjamin Kirchhoff are well known as fans of the brand's classic fragrances and have sprayed a series of Penhaligon's perfumes, including Hammam Bouquet, Bluebell, Castile, English Fern and Cornubia, before their shows.
The collaboration between the two brands, which saw the designers working with fragrance legend Bertrand Duchaufour (who has previously created scents for Acqua di Parma and Comme des Garçons, among many others), gave birth to Tralala.
"We use really traditional, old-fashioned techniques in the way that we construct our garments; our shows are often seen or spoken about as having an element of old showmanship," explains Kirchoff in the film.
The scent apes this, mixing a plethora of sensual top notes including saffron, whiskey, ambrette seed butter, galbanum and violet leaf. It then develops a heart of carnation, leather, tuberose, ylang ylang, orris and incense. The finish is provided by a heady mix of myrrh resinoid, opoponax absolute, patchouli, vetiver, cedarwood, heliotrope, musk and vanilla.
"There's an assertion and a potency about it which is not neccessarily something that you find in modern perfumery," adds Kirchoff. In the second film Duchaufour explains how he met the objective, which included not just olfactive references but collections of old lace work and embroidery.
