LaCie Sphère: Design by Christofle LaCie and French luxury brand Christofle are collaborating on a designer silver-plated hard drive. Proving that no computer peripheral is above receiving a designer makeover, the LaCie Sphère is a 1TB USB external hard drive encased in an expertly polished, silver-plated steel orb.
Described as a "genuinely functional piece of art" by its makers, each Sphère is hand-crafted and finished at Christofle's workshops in France and will go on sale later this year, priced at $490.
As well as an elegant design, potential customers will be buying a high-speed back-up drive that's both Mac and PC compatible and that comes complete with LaCie's own automated backup and password protection applications.
Over recent years, LaCie has built up a reputation for working with designers to bring desirability and aesthetics to its hard drives. This is the second time that the company has collaborated with Christofle (the first time was on the ‘Galet' USB key) and has also worked with Porsche Design on products.
