2 tents are pitched just next to Khmer temple ruins
Khiri Travel, a travel company specializing in Southeast Asian tours, is offering travelers a chance to stay in a luxury tent near the Khmer temples of Banteay Chhmar, located in Northwestern Cambodia, three and a half hours from Siem
Rap or Angkor Vat.
The tour operator has signed agreements with the local population to pitch two luxury tents near the temple ruins for tourists. Wholly involved in the project, local villagers welcome guests upon their arrival and are in charge of the portable habitats' installation and maintenance.
Inside each tent, travelers will find all the comfort and amenities of more traditional accommodations, including two beds and individual toilets in each tent. Members of the local population provide the guests with meals, which are made for the most part with local ingredients.
The initiative has earned the support of the Cambodian Ministry of Culture and from the Global Heritage Fund, an American NGO working to preserve the world's most remarkable sites.
The Banteay Chhmar temples, which date from the 12th and 13th centuries, could enter UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in the near future.
