Amman - Iman Abu Kaoud
Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh
An Formula One exhibition tour scheduled to take place in Jerusalem was diverted on Tuesday after Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh
complained to several international foreign ministers, Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova and officials at the Fédération Internationale de l\'Automobile (FIA) about the event.
The diplomat argued that the June 13 and 14 tour implicitly supported the occupation of Palestinian territories, and is tantamount to an international recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over all of Jerusalem.
Judeh also warned about the repercussions of the event being held in the ancient holy city, and criticised attempts to harm the cultural and civilised heritage of the city.
UNESCO chief Bokova reminded Israel about its legal commitments, according to international agreements related to Jerusalem and the protection of its heritage.
