Bulgarian President Rumen Radev appointed former parliament speaker Ognjan Gerdzhikov as caretaker prime minister, dissolved the blocked legislature and scheduled early elections for March 26.
Gerdzhikov replaces Boyko Borisov, who stepped down on November 16, after the candidate from his conservative GERB party lost in presidential elections to Radev.
The dissolution of the legislature, which was unable to produce a new government, takes effect on Friday, according to Radev's decree.
Snap polls could not be scheduled earlier because it had to wait for Radev to assume the post from his predecessor, on January 22.
Gerdzhikov's cabinet is to govern until elections produce a new cabinet.
