German Chancellor Angela Merkel has injured her pelvis while skiing in Switzerland, her spokesman Steffen Seibert said on Monday. The accident occurred during Merkel's Christmas holiday in Switzerland. She first thought it was just a bruise, but doctors later determined it was an "incomplete bone fracture" in her left rear pelvic area after she went back to Berlin, Seibert said. Merkel now needs help with walking and will have to remain lying down as much as possible in the next three weeks, the spokesman added. As a result, the chancellor has cancelled her visit to Poland which was scheduled for Wednesday as well as a meeting with Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel in Berlin. The chancellor will do her job mostly at home, but wants to conduct a cabinet meeting slated for Wednesday personally.
