HE Minister of Municipality and Environment Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi presided over the 28th Session of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment (CAMRE), which started today at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League.
According to the session agenda, the Council will discuss 24 clauses starting with monitoring the implementation of the United Nations Environment Program decisions, setting up the Arab presence in the United Nations Environment Program which is to be held in November 2017, following up with Arab implementation of 12 international environmental agreements on desertification, biodiversity and chemical resources, hazardous waste and others, the Arab role in the international conferences held this year, and strong mentoring of Arab preparation for international conferences that will be held in 2017.
The Council shall review the report prepared by the delegation of the General Secretariat of the Arab League at the 22nd Conference of the Parties Marrakesh Climate Change Conference and the measures to be taken by the General Secretariat of the League and the negotiation group on the Arab climate change for the setup and preparation of the 23rd Conference of the Parties, held in Germany next year under the chairmanship of the State of Fiji.
The Council will review the progress made in the preparation of the Arab strategy for disaster risk reduction, and its execution plan, as well as the Arab preparation for The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction to be held in May 2017 in Mexico, by holding an Arab conference rehearsal and choosing an Arab country to hold the conference.
The Council will also examine the importance of environmental education to achieve sustainable environmental development regarding the environmental situation in Palestine, Syrian Golan Heights, Sudan, Somalia, Comoros, Djibouti, Libya, Jordan, Lebanon, and Yemen. Furthermore, the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry lands will present a project to execute the green belt policy in the Arab region.
Finally, the council will discuss the Arab vision to achieve sustainable environmental development, in addition to the achieved steps in preparation for the joint meetings of the Council of Arab Ministers of Health and the Technical Committee of Senior Officials for the Environment, planned to be held in March 2017.
