Egypt and Sudan

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met on Sunday with Sudanese President Omar al Bashir and conveyed to him a verbal message from Abdel Fattal El Sisi on the depth of relations between the two countries, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid.

The message asserted the importance of cooperation between the two countries to achieve the interests of the two peoples and to face the common challenges the region is facing.

Shoukry was keen on posting the Sudanese leader on the latest developments in the six-party talks on the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, said Abu Zeid, pointing out to the importance of the declaration of principles reached in March after a meeting between President Sisi and the Sudanese and Ethiopian leaders in order to achieve the common gains of all parties without harm to any of them.

The meeting also touched on the preparations for the coming meeting of the higher committee between Egypt and Sudan and assignments to the foreign ministries of the two countries to fulfill the preparatory meetings ahead of the committee meeting.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour said earlier the Nile water is a national security issue for Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia, asserting that the leaders of the three nations await joint agreements to come out of negotiations on the Ethiopian dam for the best interests of the three countries.

Addressing the six-way ministerial meeting which opened here on Sunday, the minister said the meeting will resume previous discussions on the dam.
