The European Union's Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini arrived in Tehran on Saturday leading a group of top EU officials on a visit aimed at enhancing EU-Tehran relations.
Mogherini, who was the lead negotiator for the six powers who struck the deal, is scheduled to meet Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and other senior officials to discuss means of enhancing EU-Iran relations.
"This visit is an important step towards building cooperative relations between the European Union and Iran on the areas where there is mutual interest and to have frank discussions on the issues where differences remain," Mogherini said in a statement issued ahead of the trip.
She is accompanied by EU commissioners in charge of industry, transport, energy, research, science, education, culture, humanitarian aid and the environment.
During her one-day trip, Mogherini will also be meeting Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, and Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
Besides the expansion of Iran-EU relations, the talks are expected to focus on the opening of a permanent EU diplomatic office in Tehran as well as the crisis in Syria.
