Transport Minister Galal el Saeed and Chairman of the Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI) Abdel Aziz Seif eldin attended on Monday a ceremony marking the delivery of two air-conditioned railway and metro carriages.
The ceremony was attended by Trade and Industry Minister Tareq Qabil and officials from the Egyptian National Railways, the Egyptian National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) and the Egyptian Company for Metro Management and Operation.
In April 2012, the the Egyptian National Railways and SEMAF factory signed a contract to manufacture and supply 212 air-conditioned 1st class and VIP carriages at a total cost of 2.1 billion pounds.
So far, the total number of new carriages received by the authority is 161.
In December 2013, Egypt's NAT and South Korea's Hyundai Rotem Company signed a contract to supply 20 air-conditioned trains for Cairo metro Line 1, at a total cost of 2.3 billion pounds.
Nearly 50 percent of the trains’ components were locally manufactured.
