King Mohammed VI underwent an eye surgery on Wednesday at the Quinze-Vingt Hospital in Paris, in the department of Professor Jean Philippe Nordmann.

The King’s operation is to address a condition known as surger’s eye, or pterygium. He developed it in his left eye, extending over his cornea, according to a statement co-signed by Professor Nordmann and Professor Abdelaziz Maaouni, the king’s personal physician.

The condition, marked by a growth of pink, fleshy tissue on the conjunctiva, the clear tissue that lines the eyelids and covers the eyeballs, can affect anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors, particularly surfers.

Though it isn’t usually a serious condition, it sometimes requires surgery, which usually lasts for 30 minutes.
