The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday that Ebola virus claimed the lives of 10,823 people worldwide since the start of the epidemic 16 months ago.

It added that most of the deaths occurred in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

"The total number of the affected cases hits about 26,000," the WHO noted.
