World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office spokesperson Rana Sidani praised on Monday initiative of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah in hosting the 2nd donors conference for Syria, scheduled on Wednesday. Sidani told KUNA that the amount of aid received by WHO last year enabled it to minimize the health risks of 4.6 million Syrians through the distribution of medicine that treated chronic diseases, asthma, diabetes and cancer. She added that the organization distributed medical supplies and equipment used for surgeries to hospitals and medical centers in different parts of Syria, in addition to the vaccination of about 2.2 million children against polio. The spokesperson added that WHO plans this year to raise USD 178 million to be spent on vaccination campaigns against polio among two million children in the next four months. Sidani added that there are hundreds of children who have not been vaccinated against polio, saying WHO's vaccination campaign in Al-Raqqa province was halted last week due to the security situation.
