Los Angeles - UPI
Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth and Jessie Usher are confirmed for Independence Day 2.
Director Roland Emmerich will return to helm the sequel, and announced Usher's casting Tuesday on Facebook. He followed up by revealing Goldblum and Hemsworth are attached to the project on Twitter.
"Excited to Officially announce @LiamHemsworth and #JeffGoldblum as the next two pieces of the #IndependenceDay sequel," he wrote.
Independence Day was released in 1996, with Goldblum, Will Smith and Bill Pullman as stars. The film follows a group of humans who plan and execute a counterattack on aggressive aliens after the extraterrestrials destroy Washington D.C. and Los Angeles.
Smith will not return for the sequel, but Usher will reportedly portray the actor's character's son. Goldblum will reprise David Levinson, the MIT graduate who discovered the aliens' plan for attack in the first movie. Independence Day 2 opens in theaters June 24, 2016.
Goldblum is also known for The Fly and Jurassic Park, and last appeared in Mortdecai with Johnny Depp. Hemsworth recently returned as Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, while Usher currently stars as Cam Calloway on Starz series Survivor's Remorse.
