Canada's Ministry of National Defense decided on Saturday to temporarily suspend its military assistance to Iraq amid rising tensions between Iraqi and Kurdish forces.

Once more clarity exists regarding the interrelationships of Iraqi security forces, and the key priorities and tasks going forward, the Task Force will resume, Sky News channel reported, quoting the ministry's spokesperson as saying.

Canada needs to take a pause and see how things unfold. That could happen in the near term or it could take some time, the spokesman added.

On Friday, the Iraqi government decided to halt military operations against Kurdish forces in an attempt to reach an agreement between both parties through negotiations.
