A Lebanese Army officer, wounded while pursuing a wanted man in Beirut’s southern suburb last week, died of his wounds Monday. A Lebanese Army statement said a funeral procession would be held Monday afternoon for Maj. Abbas Jomaa, “who died Monday after suffering critical wounds while carrying out a security mission in Ghobeiri.” On Friday, the Lebanese Army arrested Hasan Karaki, nicknamed Antar, after a chase in the southern suburb of Ghobeiri. Karaki is wanted on several charges, including the attempted murder of Army soldiers and of being involved in a series of armed clashes with members of the Meqdad clan in Beirut’s southern suburbs. In an earlier statement, the Lebanese Army said two officers and a number of soldiers were wounded during the pursuit for Karaki in Ghobeiri.
