Three Romanian men have been arrested in New Zealand in connection with a scam involving European credit cards, the New Zealand Police said Friday.

The men, aged from their late 20s to early 40s, were allegedly involved in a sophisticated scam to fraudulently withdraw cash using skimmed credit cards from automatic teller machines in Auckland.

The men, who would appear in Auckland District Court over the weekend, arrived in New Zealand in April, Detective Senior Sergeant Iain Chapman said in a statement.

"It appears the men have allegedly been operating as an organized crime group," said Chapman.

"We were alerted to the scam when banks noticed a significant amount of money being withdrawn," he said.

"Once it was realized that fraud was occurring, some quick work and cooperation between the banks and Police led to the quick apprehension of three males allegedly involved
