Palestinian protester uses a slingshot to hurl stones

A Palestinian man wounded in clashes with Israeli security forces along the Gaza border earlier this week died from his wounds on Friday, Gazan medical sources said.

Shawqi Adib, 37, was wounded in clashes on Tuesday, when hundreds of Gazans threw stones and firebombs at Israeli forces positioned on the border.

Israeli forces responded with live fire, rubber bullets and tear gas.

Nine Gazans were killed in similar clashes on October 9 and 10. An Israeli air strike on October 11 in response to rocket fire from Gaza also killed a pregnant woman and her two-year-old daughter.

A total of 33 Palestinians, including alleged attackers, have been killed and hundreds wounded in an upsurge of violence that began at the start of the month.

The unrest has seen violent protests and a wave of knife attacks by Palestinians. Seven Israelis have died and dozens have been wounded.

The violence began in the occupied West Bank and annexed east Jerusalem, but has also drawn in protesters in the Gaza Strip, hit by three wars with Israel since 2008 and ruled by Islamist movement Hamas.

The unrest has led to fears of a full-scale Palestinian uprising, or third intifada.
