UK Criticizes Russia, China for Vetoing UN Sanctions on Assad Regime

UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson criticized Russia and China for vetoing against a UN Security Council resolution that imposed new sanctions on the Assad regime for using chemical weapons in Syria. "It is deeply disappointing that Russia and China have blocked the UN Security Council from taking action in response to the appalling use of chemical weapons in Syria," Johnson said in a statement.
He added that the Security Council's own investigation has found attacks were committed by the Syrian regime and ISIS on the Syrian people.     "Despite support from the majority of the Security Council, Russia, along with China, has chosen to prevent action," the UK Foreign Secretary said.
He also said that along with international partners, "the UK will continue to seek justice for the victims of these heinous chemical weapons attacks and work to deter the further use of chemical weapons in Syria and elsewhere." It was the seventh time Russia has vetoed a Security Council resolution on Syria since the conflict started in 2011 and the sixth time China has backed the action.
The United Nations Security Council votes on a resolution to ban the sale or supply of helicopters to the Syrian government and to blacklist Syrian.
