Syria's bloody five-year conflict has killed more than 260,000 people

UN investigators on Monday accused Damascus of carrying out an "extermination" in its prisons and detention centres, pointing out that Syrian authorities were aware of detainee deaths "on a massive scale".

Describing how "thousands of detainees held by the Syrian government have been beaten to death or died as a result of injuries sustained due to torture," the UN commission of inquiry on Syria accused Damascus of committing "extermination as a crime against humanity."
