Arab League Chief Ahmed Abul Gheit'

Spokesman for the Secretary General of the League of Arab States, Mahmoud Afifi said Sunday Arab League Chief Ahmed Abul Gheit's participation in the 71st session of the UN General Assembly in New York comes as part of intensive contacts made by the league with relevant international bodies on issues of priority to the Arab region especially Palestine, Syria, Libya and Yemen along with other important files such as terrorism, immigration and refugees. 

The spokesman also said the league's participation reflects a strong commitment by the league's chief to activate its role on the international arena, especially regarding the conditions in the Arab region.

He said Abul Gheit will hold a series of meetings with foreign ministers of influential countries as well as senior officials in international organizations and UN agencies. Abul Gheit will meet with UN Chief Ban Ki-Moon as they will sign a protocol of cooperation between the league and the UN.

Abul Gheit will also attend a series of events held on the fringe of the UNGA including two ministerial meetings on the situation in Syria and Libya, a UN session on the Middle East and a summit meeting on refugees called for by US President Barak Obama, a high-level meeting on refugees, a ministerial meeting on UN Friends Group on the Alliance of Civilizations, a high-level meeting to mark the 30th anniversary of declaration of the UN Charter on the Right to Development.
