Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed el Tayyeb had a meeting on Thursday with Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez and his accompanying delegation, on boosting bilateral cooperation.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed a host of issues of mutual interest, as well as Al Azhar's role in correcting misconceptions and fighting extremist thought via disseminating the upright teachings of Islam.
They also reviewed efforts exerted by Tayyeb, in his capacity as the president of the Muslim Council of Elders, to promote the value of tolerance and peaceful coexistence, disseminate the culture of peace and renounce violence and extremism.
A statement on the outcome of the meeting will be issued later.
